Seven asylum seeker protesting against detention of refugees were arrested in Australia

SEVEN protesters have been arrested for allegedly scaling a perimeter fence at a Darwin detention centre-NIDC, Northern Territory.

Spokesman for the protesters Ian Rintoul said they did not scale the perimeter fence but had walked around an unfinished fence.

The seven were arrested sometime around noon and are in police custody.

NT police were at Wickham Point detention centre in anticipation of trouble at the protest.

Four extra police officers have been sent to the detention centre on the outskirts of Darwin to deal with the unrest.

It is one of several protests against the detainment of asylum seekers that is being held around Australia this Easter weekend.

On Good Friday, about 100 protesters marched through a deserted Darwin city calling for the end of asylum-seeker detention.
