Violence Erupts in Maungdaw, Arakan

By James,

Confrontation among authorities, Rakhines and Rohingyans have been erupted from Friday evening after Friday prayer at the main central mosque on 7 June 2012.

Hundreds of Rohingya were not allowed to perform Jumaa’ prayers around Maungdaw Township because authority thought it was going to be something wrong when there was a large number of people gathering. Some also said the gathering was part of purpose to prayers for the ten Muslims those killed in Taungup on 3 June 2012.

Rohingya prayer claims that the mosque and Rohingya prayers were attacked by rocks and harassed despite police forces were deployed there. Confrontation was occurred there and authority claimed government office, police station and small business were attacked by rocks.

Soon, authority restored order and broke the crowd by firing that caused two Rohingya dead on the spot and many other were injured.

The result of two Rohingyans dead and the mosque was attacked, tension began furious among them. Later up to over night, mosques were attacked, security forces claimed one police officer has been died, Rakhine people’ houses in Bomu Village, Way Thar Li Village which are located on Rohingya people’ land were set fire at mid-night.

In this stage, it’s not clear to say who set fire because Police were deployed in 14 Rakhine villages, burning houses were during night while Rohingyans in all over Maungdaw and Buthidaung towns are confined within their villages by authority and only Rakhines people are with authority. Rohingyan villagers claim that some Rakhine people cooperatively with authority began setting fire of Rohingya houses including Rakhine people’ houses.

The situation is completely crux and highly tense with gunfire, burning houses and grouply confrontations. The Sail have not yet received exact number of causalities but it’s expected that at least dozen were dead from each side.

In Malaysia, several hundreds of Rakhaing Buddhists approached to the UNHCR in Kuala Lumpur to seek protection to whom urgent resettlement assurance were given by the authorities despite there is no report of attack heard on the Rakhaing.

There is urgent initiative require to immediately stop further violence in Arakan.

A notable lesson is that the National United Party of Arakan-NUPA was shocked after it discovered military regime’s secret mission to create a communal violence between the Buddhist Rakhine and Muslim Rohingyas that caused a riot on 6 Feb 2001 in Sittwe/Akyab city and resulted plundering, leaving many killed and injured.
